SONDER LIVING x DIANE JAMES

Joining the Sonder Living showroom family is formidable florist Diane James

Here, we picked her brain along with her two daughters, Carolyn and Cynthia, to find out what gets them blooming with excitement.....

We love a good moodboard too! Where do you draw inspiration from typically?

We're inspired by everything we see, whether it's a beautiful shop window, Instagram Post, a fashion or home decor spread in a magazine, and even by fresh floral designs.

What is the impact that lasting florals make on an interior?

Bringing nature into your home creates a sense of well-being and happiness that can’t be replicated with other home décor accessories. That being said, having fresh flowers and plants all the time is not always practical or even possible. Lifelike faux-florals are an easy way to make your home feel warm and lived in, and they’re perfect for second homes.

Florals all-year round is a dream. Is there a specific palette that you love working with?

Not specifically—Since we’re able to create a collection every season, we can pick the colors we love and that are on trend. We know our clients do prefer greens, whites, pinks and blues over yellows, oranges and reds so we tend to design with those palettes in mind. What you won’t find is “decorator” colors like teal and gray and beige—we’re not your grandmother’s silk flowers!

Tell us about your creative process. What is your starting point for a new arrangement?

Before we start a collection, we create a moodboard with pictures that capture the look and feel we want for the season. For instance, we introduced the new Bohemian Rhapsody collection for Fall 2019, which is filled with unrestrained bursts of color, textured containers and carefree flowers so the designs are bohemian in spirit, not just in style. We shop for our stems and containers in January and July using the mood boards as guides and once the samples come in, begin the design process.

What are your personal favorite blooms?

We don't like playing favorites, much like with our own kids! Each bloom is like a child to us, but if we had to play favorites, peonies, ranunculus, anemones and allium would top our list.
